Introduction
I have been asked by the client to create a music magazine that reflects the vibrant music scene developing locally in North London. I will be creating a a pitch, front cover and a double page spread following the client brief being a new music magazine for North London within the vibrant music scene.

Client requirements
  • Produce a new online and print based magazine - Explicit
  • Needs to have a front cover - Explicit
  • Needs a double page spread - Explicit
  • Sample pages are required - Explicit and implicit
  • Produce original content - Open to interpretation
  • Need to plan, pitch, produce and edit sample pages for the magazine - Explicit, implicit and open to interpretation
  • Edit together original content together to create meaning - Open to interpretation
First thoughts

Idea 1: A North London genre based magazine that will showcase the talent that the area has to offer. included will be articles, interviews and promotions.

Idea 2: A North London based venue magazine showcasing the best venues around and upcoming as well as recent shows. reviews, promotion, interviews, reviews and articles could be included.

Idea 3: A North London artist based magazine promoting the up and coming talent that North London has to offer. the content would include articles, interviews, promotion, stories and event news.

Three key ideas

Idea 1: This monthly magazine would consist of a grime based genre. It will showcase the talent that North London has to offer and will be an attempt to help the genres popularity increase. The magazine will cost £2.99 as I believe that is a fair price and any higher than that could result in low demand as a high price is off putting baring in mind that rap is usually associated with the lower class (C2DE) and in some aspects a gang culture so my possible audience could be put off very easily due to low disposable income available.
My magazine would include articles on the latest news in North London grime as well as interviews with artists and critics and promotional content being advertising for upcoming shows and albums/singles.
The USP for my magazine would be a QR code that my readers could scan and give them exclusive samples of music content pre-release.
A double page spread could include a large image of an artist surrounded by facts about them as well as an interview with the artist themselves. there could also be promotion from the artist such as release dates for an album or single and tour/event dates.

My primary target audience would be:

gender: male
race: black/mixed
age: 18-22
class: lower (C2DE)
ethnicity: English-african

My secondary target audience would be:

gender: Males and females
race: All
age: 15-18
class: lower (C2DE)
ethnicity: All

Idea 2: A monthly North London based venue magazine showcasing the best venues around and upcoming as well as recent shows. this magazine would be created to inform customer and enable them to have the best time possible at north Londons most popular venues. The magazine would cost £1.79 as I believe that customers may shy away if the price was higher as they could just find reviews and articles for venues online as an alternative, however my magazine would be more convenient and reliable. The magazine would include reviews based on the venues , promotion for venues and events, interviews from artists and venue critics/attenders and articles based on event news. A double page spread could include the top 5 best rated venues in North London and could contain articles with information on each one alongside quotes from customers who have recently reviewed the venue.

my target audience would be:

gender: males and females
race: white
age: 22-26
class: middle
ethnicity: white-british

Idea 3: A weekly North London artist based magazine promoting the up and coming talent that North London has to offer. This magazine would hold a large variety of artists within several open genres and would cost £3.50 as it will be quite a large magazine and would be aimed at people with a high disposable income as they can afford it. The magazine would include articles on artists, interviews with artists or critics, promotional content such as album advertisement, stories such as the life stories of famous artists and event news for upcoming events. A double page spread could include some 'rising stars' and could have the stories of a few artists and how they got to where they are now and where they aspire to be in the future. it could also showcase their talent by adding their social media channels to help promote their talent to the reader.

my target audience would be:

gender: males and females
race: white
age: 14-18
class: middle
ethnicity: White-British

Idea 1:
Strengths
Weaknesses
- There will be lots of content as it is s popular genre in North London therefore my magazine content will stay fresh

- provides the latest news in the grime scene which will attract customers and therefore expand my audience

- QR , USP feature would be unique and could attract many customers, this would help to fight competition and attempt to lead the market in North London

- would be cool and trendy and appeal to the target audience as well as a younger audience who are into the popular genre which would create a lot of interest that could lead to on trial purchases

-Grime is becoming increasingly popular therefore there will be a growing demand as well as a growing audience. there will also be more content available which could result in a larger magazine size with fresh content
 - target audience has low disposable income therefore the magazine may have to be an affordable price which means less profit

- a lot of grime based content is online rather than in physical form therefore some people may shy away from a physical form

- grime can sometimes be viewed negatively in the media due to gang violence, drug talk and sexism therefore the magazine would have to exclude that kind of content

- £2.99 may be slightly too expensive at second thought which could mean that the price could have to be reduced depending on sales figures

Idea 2:
Strengths
Weaknesses
-promotion/advertisement and sponsorship revenue means several income sources for the magazine to rely on

-affordable price means customers are more inclined to purchase

-informs readers with reliable information therefore it is a good source for the latest news

-could have potential for readers to get discounts on events therefore some readers may purchase just for discounts offered
- information on events can be found on online therefore some customers may feel like they do not need to purchase the magazine

-readers younger than the target audience may not be allowed into some of the venues therefore the content is limited

-the content may be restricted as there aren't many events at times therefore the quality of the content may be comprimised and customers may not rate the magazine highly leading to bad reviews

Idea 3:
Strengths
Weaknesses
-will help the music community and give hidden/rising talent the platform to boost their career

-large magazine would mean a lot of content for readers

-would cover several genres

- weekly editions means frequent purchases and fresh content for readers
-£3.50 could be seen as expensive by some although it is aimed at the middle class

-theres only a certain number of artists to promote

-the magazine content could be viewed as boring and repetitive

Conclusion:

In conclusion I have chosen idea 1 being a North London grime based magazine. This is because I felt like there was potential with the idea and my strong interest in the music genre would make me passionate about the magazine. The USP, the QR code concept is an idea that I believe could really excel the magazine and put it on shop shelfs across the whole of North London. The other ideas were good although I didn't feel that they had much potential, therefore idea 1 was the clear option for me. this magazine links to the client brief as it meets it by being in North London as well as being original content and reflecting the vibrant music scene that is developing locally. I felt like this magazine choice would also enable me to show the genre in a positive light and to create a good impact on the readers, a non financial aim which links to the brief as it is original content as well as to create a meaning. Grime has only been around for the last few years, therefore the only way is up and I believe I could possibly influence that through my magazine.
